I am making a condolence section for a funeral website.  I was wondering if I use jcomments with k2. Is taht possible and does jcomments allow the users making the comment to select whether it's private or public.

If so how. please share some info.
thanks

No, JComment does not allow to make comment private. But seems you can make a trick. The JComments has posibility to assign permissions for the article's owner to publish/unpublish comments. So if you disable auto publishing all comments for article will be unpublished and the article's owner (and may be some administrators - this related to their permissions) could see these comments.
