Hi Smart,
After doing some searching through the forums here, I discovered that I'm not alone with this issue, but no solution has been presented, so far.  There are a good amount of details to share with you about what I've discovered so far, so I'm going to try to list them here in the hope that they will help other members in a similar situation determine if their issue is truly the same as mine.

After installing JComments without error, I quickly discovered that the configuration settings were not saving properly.  The install automatically sends us to the Settings > General tab where I personalized what I found there and continued by moving through the other tabs under 'Settings' (i.e. Layout, Permissions, Restrictions, Filter & Messages).  When I was done, I clicked on Save and was told that it saved those new settings.  I then moved over to the Smiles link and moved a couple of those around just for fun.  I then Saved those changes, too.

When I then went back into the Settings > General tab, I saw that my customizations were no longer showing, as though I had never set them up of Saved the changes.  Assuming that perhaps I should have save each individual tab before moving onto the next, I went through each of them again, Saving each tab prior to moving to the next.  I then went back to the General tab and it was showing properly.  I then clicked on the Smiles link and then back on the Settings link and discovered that again, the customizations were gone.  So, it appears that the moment I leave the 'Saved' Settings area, the back-end forgets what I saved.

Interestingly, however, the Smiles section remembered my customizations.

Here's what I have discovered so far:
While resolving an issue I had with another extension, I found that having Codemirror set as my default editor was interfering with that extension.  So, I set myself with no editor to see if that would help.  No joy.

I read here in the forums where you mention that a couple of the .zip files contained in your package (convert.zip & plugins.zip) may not unpack during the install.  Upon investigating, I discovered that one of those (convert.zip) had not unpacked in mine, too.  I unpacked it manually, but still no joy.

I uninstalled & re installed, but still no joy. (Convert.zip still did not unpack correctly, but I fixed that again)

I uninstalled, manually cleared out the still-present JComments folder from the server and re installed, but still, no joy. (this time Convert.zip did unpack)

On a hunch, I went out to the only webpage that I originally told JComments to function and found that it looked to be working.  I added a comment and found that it was working according to the last customizations I had set.  What it did not do is send me a notification, which I had instructed it to do on my 'previous' setting of the options (when I set up the settings this time, I had only changed a couple of things from the defaults to see if it would remember them and the 'notification' settings were not part of that).

So, it DOES seem to respect the last Saving of the settings, but we have to go through and reset ALL of them if we want to make even a single modification to any of them later.  Otherwise, it simply assumes that the previous customizations are now intentionally being reverted back to their defaults, which is not the intention, of course.

That's all I have, for now, but I hope it's enough to provide you with the insight needed to figure out what might be causing the problem.  Of course, if you would like direct access to my server install to investigate other aspects of this, that is not a problem, either.

Edit:  One major issue that this causes is that the back-end settings cannot be convinced that Notifications are set, so there is no way to apply the "Allow to report comment to administrator" for ANY of the user types.  Even after setting up ALL of the Settings tabs and clicking Save, that function remains unavailable with a warning icon telling me to enable notifications first.  Note that I have not yet tried submitting a comment with a full Save of custom settings including Notifications.  I am about to test that now and will report back with my results.

It took a little longer than I expected, but the results of additional testing show that the Notification system is not working, even though my last Settings Save included that feature and I have not moved away from that page on the back end.

It now appears that some of the settings are Saved (such as Categories, even though their display reverts back to the defaults upon moving away and coming back to them), but others, like the Notification section, are not even recognized when Saving.

I'm guessing that this kind of behavior does not make sense except in the case of a conflict with another extension.  Is there a list of known conflicts somewhere that I can view to see if my setup contains any of them?

None of my settings are being saved. It would help if the author would post what he finds here in a post and not just in PM.
That way those of us that understand code and how our site works can get this fixed.
The component looks to be promising but I can't get it to work...

version 2.2.0.2

smart... please help us through this and post your finding here.
