When clicking on page 2 all i get is a spinning gif for a moment, then that vanishes.

It is jcomments version 2.0 being displayed on com_zoo.

I stepped through the javascript and simply don't see what the problem is.

Do you have any thoughts or suggestions?

It looks like you are using old version of JComments. Update to JComments 2.2.0.2 and then check this issue again.
