Module Position--Include JComments

Gents,

I'm sure this is just me, but I can't seem to get JComments in a custom module position on the front page, right lower sidebar.

It's not clear from the documentation how to do this, so I created a custom module and assigned it to the lowr right front page sidebar.  I used JCEditor to insert the {JComments on}, but nada.  I attach a screen shot of the FP sidebar position.

Any help would be appreciated.

The JComments will not work in any modules. The tag {jcomments on} is processed by content plugin and works only in com_content. If you need some other behaviour you'll need to make some other solution for this. It could be either some custom module or custom plugin what supports these tags in modules. But default Content - JComments plugin will not work in modules.

Thanks for the reply.  How can I get Jcomments to play on the Frontpage?  For that matter, how do I control where the comments appear on any given page?  In one of your demo screenshots, it shows the latest posts on the FP upper left.

Maybe I missed that in the documentation, so perhaps you could give me a link to where this is discussed.

Try Ultimate Content Display (UCD) (module) from Joomlaworks.
Point is to make a separat article and not to link it anywhere in menus.

In UCD module just put the ID of that article. And in article put that description from image above and Jcomments code..

Hopefully it will work. UCD never missed to parse plugins for me.

Ah, BBC.  Good suggestion, but UCD is like La Isla de La Muerte---you can only find it if you have been there.  Minimal UCD documentation means it's out of range for me, as I do not even follow your instructions to set this up with UCD.  Not at all clear how to do this.

There is nothing complicated.

It is little wrong in my explanation above. New article won´t help you. You will not get listed comments in module, because you will not have any comments in hidden article.
(hopefully it works with UCD, didn´t tested. But UCD never missed to parse any third party plugin for me)


Go to UCD module settings (admin panel) and chose to pull article ID, not category or section.
And field under write article ID.

Article ID number you find in Article Manager (right column). If you want "Nevada Navy" in module, find ID of that article.

Then you have 3 styling (2 javascript options) in module settings.

Chose one you like. If you are not satisfied open CSS file and style it.

UCD is little sensitive to cache (styling). So allways delete Joomla cache when you change something.

Can you say if you want all comments listed in module ? Or you want something else ?
It would maybe be ugly, module width is not so great.

I just tested. UCD shows only Introtext + intro image if you wish.

So you cannot have comments listed in module. Just a link to Jcomments as you have in ordinary intro for articles.

But it is working OK. When you click at "Add comment" you get redirected to that particulary article.

Try to explain more detailed what you want from this module.

First, thank you for your patience and persistence in suggesting a fix.  I greatly appreciate your efforts.

Second, I'm very pleased that you tested your method and got it to work.  That means that I am not very far from making it work for me!

Third, I tried to follow your instructions:

Go to UCD module settings (admin panel) and chose to pull article ID, not category or section.
And field under write article ID.

But in my settings panel, JComments says that if I do not select a category, JComments will be disabled, so I don't understand the

pull aritcle ID

as I see no place in the SETTINGS>GENERAL tab so to do.  But you did it, so if you could be patient enough to explain that again, I should be grateful.

Finally, what I'm trying to do;  If I were King of Jcomments and knew what I was doing, I would end up with a custom module that I could position in my right sidebar which showed just a few of the latest comments, and when the user clicked on "Add Comment" then the user would be re-directed to a full page of comments.  (You have most of this done)

In support of this, I have done the following:

1. Created a custom HTML module, and placed this in the right sidebar.(This is the image at the beginning of this thread)
2. I tried to put JComments in this module by inserting {JComments on} Of course, this didn't work, as Smart pointed out.

I think you have the solution if I can understand the steps.  Again, thanks for your patience.

Whoops.  You said UCD, and I was in JComments.  I'll try to be more attentive and try that with the UCD control panel, and see if that works and let you know.

Finally on the same page with you, but still can't make it work.

Here is what I did:

1. Created a custom HTML module as described before, front page, sidebar A, image attached. The module's ID is 152.

2. Opened the UCD Module Edit>Parameters.

3. Parameters>content retrieval source>content source item and selected "Content Item"

4. Parameters>content retrieval source>content source item>Content source IDs (required) and inserted the module ID of 152

Image attached shows the selection above.

Then I cleared the cache and reloaded the site.  Jcomments appeared at the end of all the articles as always, but nothing appeared from UCD or JComments on the front page in sidebar A or anywhere as you seem to have seen in your solution.  UCD seems to be invisible, but I'm sure I did something.  Or didn't.

But I think I'm close.  Again, thanks for your patience in reviewing this.

O no.....you get it all wrong.

Purpose of UCD is only to show articles. Not module in module. (your custom html module)

Forget HTML module if you will get it to work with UCD.

UCD shows article/s (output and styling are your choice).

And in the article you put that code for Jcomments. As you did in your picture above.

UCD simply parse third party plugins. In your case that plugin is that Jcomments code at the end of the article. {jcomments on}
And there you get (in UCD module) same link (or comments count) as you have in blog listing.

So, it is not ID of the module (forget HTML module), it is ID of your article. In Article manager, right column.

Basically, you need to have a article. And plugin code in that article.

You can use UCD module for a lot of different things.
For galeries, with thumbs and nice popups. (just put galery plugin code in some article).

For Video, MP3 players.
For almost everything that use plugins.

Best is that you have article editor and it is some easy way to style your module as you wish. Plus it parses plugins.
Thera are not many modules that can do this.

Text, images...etc.
With ordinary modules you have to open PHP and CSS files to do just small correction.
