would it be possible to edit a comment to move it to a different topic?

hard to explain exactly - but I have a few hundred comments on one article... that really belong with a different article.
and really need to get them assigned to the correct post.

No, this feature isn't supported. But you can do this manually through phpMyAdmin by changing value of the field object_id in jos_jcomments table. Just replace with new one for items you want to move.
