My problem is that unregistered users - or, registered users who aren't logged in - don't see the "Comments (1)" text - all they see is the "Add a comment" text.
I'm running the current version of JComments.
If you would like, I can give you a userid and password so you can check into it.

May be you don't enable autopublishing and all added comments are unpublished? Check this in JComments backend

Not quite... I've attached two images. capture1.png is what people who are NOT logged in see. It says, "Add new comment" - but I've set this option to be unavailable to the group Unpublished. However, when you click on the Add new comment link, you get taken to the full article - and there's no form to comment, which is correct.
The image capture2.png shows what you see when you ARE logged in, and clicking this link does, indeed, show the comment and the form.
What I want is for people who are unregistered or not logged in to be able to see, but not make or respond to, comments while registered users who are logged in can also see them, but can also add or reply to comments.
By the way - the article where the link came from DOES have one published comment. But it does NOT show up UNLESS you are registered and logged in.

Open site's backend -> JComments -> Manage comments and you can see that all comments for the article 'Voice Of Our Local Leaders' are unpublished. This is reason they aren't visible to guests. You need publish these comments and after this they will available for guests.

Fine, but what about the comments on the "Welcome to the Beaufort County Republican Party" article? If I log in, it shows that there is a comment - but if I'm not logged in , all I see is the "add new comment" link.

Here the same story. For this artilce (with ID 88) where is one comment, posted by Pete G. But in JComments backend you could see another 2 comments what left to article with same name but ID = 73 and this article is unpublished. Open Joomla's backend -> Article Manager and you can see 2 articles - one published and one unpublished (you can see it by typing 'Welcome to the Beaufort County Republican Party' in search field and press Filter). The first comment (that unpublished) left to published article and 2 comments (published) left to unpublished article. So there is no any magic

Here the same problem... if an unregistered user reads our news the option "write a comment" (Kommentar schreiben) is displayed... In the backend I put the option like that the unregistered users don't have this permission... any idea? An unregistered user (by the way, the user registration is disabled on our page) should only read the comments written by the registered users, admins, etc... homepage: www.sambaschraenzer.ch

Do you've Joomla cache enabled? Have you tried to clean it after settings changing? I'll try to reproduce this issue and I need more information about it.

Yes, if some user group has no permissions to write comments and where is no message set - JComments will display nothing. If you need some message like 'You have no rigths to post comment. Login or register to post comments' you need to set this message in JComments settings (Messages tab).
